GitHub donates private repositories to women learning open source software | The Ada Initiative

In working with women in open source, the Ada Initiative found that many women are reluctant to post their code publicly when they are first getting started in open source software. This reluctance has good reasons behind it: fear of being told they are bad programmers, fear of being publicly mocked or harassed, and even fear of losing job opportunities. All of these are greater risks for women on average than men. But the best way to get better at programming is to collaborate with and get review from other programmers, which is far easier to do with a shared repository like those provided by GitHub. Unfortunately, private repositories are too expensive for most women just getting started in open source software.
We went to GitHub with our dilemma, and they immediately offered us unlimited free repositories on the Ada Initiative GitHub account.

Great collaboration.

This type project by Mia Dörwald rules. Actually, all of her typography work rules, but this is the one that stuck out to me the most. The imagery makes the whole thing feel like a high fashion something, but really it’s all melty and weird. It’s perfect.

This weekend has served as a good respite from the physical, emotional and intellectual strains of school. On Friday, friends and I gathered to make homemade pizza / drink wine. I got to know an exchange student from Tunisia, Molka. She cooked some Tunisian Tuna and Almond Kaak Warka (a Tunisian pastry) for everyone. Yesterday after I  finished working at the Cafe, @Asymmetric-Effects and I went to Revival Records to celebrate the store’s Record Day. We didn’t score any discounts, but bought the following:Acid | Ray BarrettoRetrograde | James Blake Good Kid, m.A.A.d City | Kendrick Lamar Midnight Marauders | A Tribe Called Quest In co-celebration of the new records and… (*snickers*) Cannabis Day, we invited some friends over for music, games, food, brews and of course, some smokes.  This morning I lounged around and did a lot of reorganization and planning. After a late breakfast, I’ve returned to the university’s library to resume work. Thanks to everyone I interacted with this weekend. I’m in a beautiful state of relaxation as I return to my studies. :-)
