I think I read a post a while back saying you weren't a feminist? Why don't you identify as a feminist?

Well, I’ve expressed that I have a hard time identifying with modern feminism, but I do identify as a feminist (more concisely, that I am anti-oppression of any kind.)

In regards to feminism, I look up to the words of writer Flavia Dzodan- “My feminism will be intersectional or it will be bullshit.”

Meaning, that other factors need to be taken into consideration when combating the oppression of women—The color of our skin, how much money we have, the amenities we have access to, where we were born, how we were raised, our sexuality, etc.- all define how we see/experience the world.  Mainstream feminism often fails to be intersectional. It often marginalizes the experiences of race, ethnicity, social class and so forth.

I am a straight, biracial, middle working class woman, living in the United States and all those (and other factors) shape the way I see/experience the world. I think it’s Ludacris to expect that one person can be the voice of all women (although there are certainly people that do a better job than others).

It’s just really important to understand that one single experience may not be generalizable to all women. Feminism, for me, has just been a process of learning, understanding and accepting the real struggles of all sorts of different women and then from there trying to improve the conditions for them.
