I agree. Orange is a beautiful color on women of darker complexion/ women with darker hair color. I think most of us would say the woman on the left looks better with orange lipstick. Yes?

Why is this?

Well, I’m not an expert, but there is definitely a science to color combinations that people overlook. I read The Art of Color by Johannes Itten over the summer. He is credited for identifying strategies for successful color combinations. One (of the six) successful color combinations is the contrast of saturation, which is the juxtaposition of light and dark colors and their respective saturation.

I think, perhaps, an orange tinted lipstick on women with darker hair/darker complexion would be considered a contrast of saturation. Since Brown/tan/orange can (roughly) fall in the same saturation set of colors.

This would also mean that someone with fairer complexion/ fairer hair would arguably look better with a pinker shade of lipstick. Since white/peach/ pink (roughly) fall in the same saturation set.

So, I agree with you with a subjective eye that that is usually the case, but also, there’s color theory applied.
